A year and a half ago, Threads was just an idea in Mark Zuckerberg’s mind. Today, the Meta CEO announced that Threads, the rival to Elon Musk’s X, has surpassed 175 million monthly active users. This milestone comes as Threads approaches its one-year anniversary on July 5th, 2024.
When Threads launched on the App Store on July 5th, 2023, it arrived amidst a tumultuous period for its competitor, X (formerly Twitter), as Elon Musk made significant changes to the platform and even challenged Zuckerberg to a cage match that never materialized. One year later, Threads continues to grow steadily, though not at the explosive rate of its initial launch. Meanwhile, Musk has not shared comparable user metrics for X since taking over.
The First Year of Threads
As with any social network, monthly user figures only tell part of the story. Notably, unlike Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, Meta has not yet shared daily user numbers for Threads. This suggests that the app still experiences significant traffic from casual users who have not yet become regulars.
Sources within Meta have indicated that much of Threads' growth is fueled by its promotion within Instagram. Both apps share the same account system, a feature that is not expected to change.
Even so, reaching 175 million monthly users within a year is a significant achievement, especially considering Meta's mixed history with standalone app experiments. Zuckerberg has expressed confidence that Threads could become Meta’s next billion-user app. To sustain its growth, Meta is focusing on markets where it can capture more market share from X, such as Japan.
Currently, Threads is not a major revenue generator for Meta, but the company has the financial resources to support it indefinitely. There are plans to introduce ads on Threads next year, leveraging Instagram’s existing ad system. Given Meta’s focus on non-political, lighthearted content, Threads could attract advertisers seeking a brand-safe alternative to X.
“It would be great if it gets really, really big, but I’m actually more interested in if it becomes culturally relevant and if it gets hundreds of millions of users,” said Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, when Threads first launched. A year later, while Threads still has progress to make culturally, its ongoing growth suggests that Meta has the runway to achieve this goal.
